“Absolutely stunning cottage.”

Clean, comfortable, and all eventualities catered for. Sea view from second floor, stones throw from cod and lobster, and beach. Tucked down small alley, so peaceful (apart from seagull chorus that reminds you, you are at the coast). Recommend write down Keysafe code as no signal in village, but even a frantic phonecall was answered promptly and efficiently. WiFi in cottage, games, books, dads, TV etc for snuggly evening. Well Recommend

As regards the score and cleanliness, we have had some issues with end of season wear and tear and mustiness but have addressed these with an early deep clean and discovered the culprit for the fusty smell was a dog bed in the under stairs cloaks area and the need for a new mop! As we all know the first half of June was exceptionally wet and the majority of cottages in Staithes are built into the hillside and in close proximity to each other which has potential to cause issues. “We thoroughly enjoyed staying in your lovely property, the high quality of its decor, furnishings and the attention to detail, made it a pleasure to be there.”

I would just comment that on first entering the cottage there was a noticeable fusty , slightly damp smell in the rooms. However once the rooms had been aired and some heating switched on it was a lot less noticeable. It’s probably due to the large amounts of rain we’ve been experiencing !! Hopefully we will be able to enjoy staying at Bramla again in the future.

Thank you for your feedback Suzanne. Damp can be a problem for the cottages in Staithes due to the quirky way the buildings were built and being near the coast and river, especially if not aired. I'm glad it settled but after another guest mentioned the odd smell we changed the rug and disposed of the dog bed which seemed to do the trick. We're really glad you enjoyed your holiday. No problem with cottage it was spot on, I think more information regarding parking the fact that even with permit (grateful) there are not many spaces also the walk up to car park is not a steady uphill walk it’s hard going for older people and people with breathing difficulties, it has not put us off as it’s beautiful we are booking for next year

The parking permit doesn't unfortunately guarantee a parking space either for the residents or guests in the council car park in high season and it is not needed from November to March. There is Glen Vale private car park just below Bank Top which some of our guests have booked for their stays to guarantee them a place. Yes walking up from the harbour to the top takes your breath away but then hopefully so do the views! There is a shorter route following The Stubble, the path just below Glen Vale car park which is a lovely view of the roof tops and sea . Hope this helps for next time. Property Owner

A small welcome pack including fresh milk would be good especially as shops in close proximity in village either don't stock or have restricted opening times. North Yorkshire is a beautiful area with lovely sandy beaches in close proximity, and lots of other interesting places to visit. Definately would return

We're pleased that you were happy with the cottage and area. Although there are lovely pubs and cafes, as a self catering property we appreciate that the village shops are limited which means bringing the essentials with you or shopping at the Coop on the main road just before entering Staithes. We made the decision to provide an 'emergency' box of basics in the cottage to be refilled at the client's convenience rather than fresh produce as we know from personal experience not everyone is able to consume dairy, nuts, gluten, alcohol etc and this can cause disappointment. The cottage was exceptionally well equiped in the kitchen department and had very useful notes on operating various articles of equipment around the house. The area in the car park where one can park with the Council permit is very poorly signed and hard to identify. Luckily the house owners provided a car park photo which clearly identified the useable area - this should perhaps get a mention in the Listing.

Only a suggestion a small bench or bistro table and chair set outside would have been nice, to sit on whilst having a cuppa or reading. However understand it’s not the best outlook in Gun Gutter with the bins all having to be there too.

We checked with Sykes and it is stated in 3 areas of their information re parking, twice on the website and also on the cottage access information regarding where to park. On the permit mount itself there are very clear instructions where the council car park is and again in the cottage is a photographic map with the parking area highlighted in red. We honestly do not know what else we can do but think the signage by the private car park on the right of the toilets is maybe not clear enough for people to realize they have driven into the wrong area if they are wanting the council car park, hence all our information. People worried about the parking when its busy could buy a weeks permit in Glenvale Car Park if this helps. We cannot understand why the last photo of the permit wasn't deemed clear enough but our caretakers are sending another at the next changeover. So glad however you enjoyed the stay in the cottage. So sorry for the parking issues Carol. Unfortunately Scarborough Borough Council did not see fit to let us owners know the situation so we were unable to inform you in advance. I will contact the council on your and our behalf and complain. It is a pity to reduce our ratings by 25% because of this issue which may have been avoided but it is clear in the holiday information that although we pay the council for a permit they cannot guarantee a parking space when busy. Owners left very useful information Slight space issues around dining area and access to cupboard/dishwasher but not a major problem The bathroom was very spacious and well set out although the shower water -flow a little disappointing Only a few paces to the Cod and Lobster (which is a great pub ) and the street /harbour making loading/unloading easier than in sometimes can be in Staithes All in all a good experience and one we would definitely like to repeat in the future

We have stayed at another property in Staithes and that property was a few divisions lower than Bramla. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would have no hesitation in staying there again. The location of the property is spot on for both the beach and The Cod and Lobster which also deserves a merited mention. The Bramla does come with a parking pass and we took the opportunity of taking the bus to both Saltburn and Whitby. Anybody coming here enjoy your stay..you will not regret it.

“Lovely little cottage, at the most, a 1 minute walk away from the beach and some stunning views.”

The cottage is well equipped, clean and reasonably spacious. Parking at the top of the hill was sometimes stressful (even with the parking permit) as spaces were very limited. No Wi-Fi and no phone signal, which was actually a relief. I would recommend the fish and chip place at the top of the hill (near the turn from the main road down to Staithes). We had a lovely week with some amazing weather. I would thoroughly recommend the Bramla at Staithes!

“Really would benefit from an internet connection as no mobile network.”

Ok when weather is great but if poring with rain and stuck indoors, internet would be helpful. Also the wardrobe must have had a damp problem as all our clothes took on a musty smell and needed to be laundered even if not worn. Plus our suitcases really smelt as stored them in the same cupboard.

This was completed in Nov with wifi, smart TV and a landline for incoming calls. Appologies for the wardrobe being musty. Bramla had been unoccupied for 2 weeks in the wettest May ever & damp can be an issue in these cottages. We have put a humidifiers in now Property Owner

“Lovely cottage - pictures don't do it justice!”

A 15 second walk to the Cod & Lobster, and a 30 second walk to the beach. Plenty of little walks up the snickleways and Port Mulgrave and Runswick Bay are walk-able along the clifftop paths. The cottage was cosy and comfortable with a well equipped kitchen - we were there during Storm Ciara, and were totally sheltered, didn't even feel a breeze! We chose to sleep in the twin room on the top floor as it was light, airy and spacious with sea views. Would recommend this cottage.

“Situation of cottage.”

Village itself. Local pub cod and lobster. walking choices. all exceptional. just a couple of minor things. Rug in lounge needs a good clean, full of sand/dust. Hoover smells of dogs when used. Very minor and did not spoil the cottage but could be addressed to get top marks on all. exceptional holiday all round. Very warm and cosy and Christmas decorations a nice touch. thank you for a wonderful stay. recommended , bus to Whitby and walk back to Staithes. Its around 12.5 miles and is stunning. recommended, fish and chips in Cod and lobster. Small size is still huge , delicious.

“Cottage well appointed.”

Clean and very well decorated and furnished. It made for a comfortable break. Extra touches such as cafetiere( really irritating if there isn’t one) , 2 hairdryers, 2 make up mirrors, spare shampoo and conditioner ( if you ve forgotten yours) were much appreciated. Also a box with basic groceries that you could dip into and replace. Although we left our grandchildren at home there was a very good selection of games, videos etc for children as well as similar for adults.

Unfortunately the access in the small village is by necessity very limited but we find as it is so close to the harbour, if you pull up there and 1 person remains with the car whilst the other unloads & collects parking permit for Bank Top it is usually fine. “The cottage is well located in the old part of Staithes,very close to the harbour and local pub and shops.”

It is very comfortably fitted out with all the amenities required for a pleasant, relaxing break. The kitchen is well equipped, sitting room comfortable and well furnished, although could do with having a curtain for the door window. The bathroom is very spacious with separate bath and shower cubicle. The bedrooms are good sizes too. Small negatives are the small bath towels (bath sheets would be great) and lack of wifi (the reason it didn't get top marks for facilities). Some may see this as a benefit though but with mobile phone reception being non-existent in Staithes apart from a limited area (by the harbour or at the top of the hill) it could be an issue. Otherwise a very pleasant cottage and worth another visit.

The property

Tucked away from the sweeping shores of the harbour and nestled on a quiet narrow passage in the pretty seaside village of Staithes, Bramla cottage is a recently renovated 18th century fisherman’s cottage just 20 metres from the harbour beach perfect for a family or friends.

The cosy sitting room is the perfect place to relax, sit back in the three piece suite and curl up in front of the TV after a day exploring.

Three steps down lead you to the quarry tiled, well-equipped antique pine dining kitchen.

Stairs from the sitting room lead up to the first floor, offering storage space and shelves with books, games and DVD’s for the whole family to enjoy.

Up on the first floor is a modern-style bathroom in coastal white and blue hues, the bath sits separate from the shower, a delightful, refreshing space to return for a long hot soak after a busy day exploring the surrounding areas.

Next door the sunny double room boasts sea views and built in wardrobe.

A further set of stairs lead to a spacious twin bedroom dressed in an aqua marine seaside theme which also boasts a sea view and is suitable for both adults and children, and there is also room for a travel cot if needed.

STAITHES

Whitby 10 miles.

The charming and sleepy seaside village of Staithes, with its cobbled streets and back alleys, is something of an artist’s dream. Its pretty houses and cottages are clustered around the old harbour and surrounded by high craggy cliffs on three sides, with a sheltered sandy beach set amongst the rocky coastline. The village can claim connections with Captain Cook who was apprenticed to a draper near the harbour. Nowadays, Staithes is a must for anyone visiting the Yorkshire Coast and has a good selection of pubs, shops and tea rooms. Staithes is still home to an RNLI lifeboat station and a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) landing fish, crab and lobster, with boat trips for birdwatching, fishing and even whale watching available. It’s also the location of the popular BBC children’s TV series, Old Jack’s Boat. Staithes has a strong attraction for artists, with an annual Art and Heritage Festival, galleries and artists studios with art courses and workshops regularly on offer. There’s a free Illusion Trail, which guides visitors around the network of ginnels (alleyways), with trail guides available locally.
