“Nice place, just needs updating .”

More equipment in kitchen, gas fire not working, the first night the house heating was too low had to wrap up in lounge. Just needs a service on gas and electric, so everything works correctly ( gas fire not working, radiator have cold spots , ) could do with a information pack about how things work and what to do in area,

“Eally disappointed after my first good initial impression.”

It could be so lovely & comfortable if it was deep cleaned & updated a little. It states dogs are welcome but are only allowed downstairs with nothing to prevent them going upstairs. A child gate would be useful. We found another persons prescription medicine in one of the rooms. Cobwebs, dirty floors. Very uncomfortable beds. We left early. Smoke detector hanging off the ceiling. Loose loo seat & kitchen tap. Difficult to work TV. Left it cleaner than we found it. The £150 good housekeeping bond is laughable as many cushions, towels, bedding, sofa were stained. Cut my ankle on the metal bit of the bed in the very small downstairs bedroom. Take an eye mask as the curtains don't keep out the light. Not enough to cater for 8 people (glasses, seats, etc). Such a shame as it could be wonderful with a little effort. The showers were great & l loved the period features. Great location if you don't mind noise from the street & cafe next door. No parking, but this isn't an issue as there's plenty of places to park.

“Cottage was well situated close to shops pubs cafés restaurants and takeaways.”

The property had everything we required for a weeks stay it was clean and well maintained with only the odd small thing that needed minor repair but nothing that was a problem. One thing that would improve the cottage would be upgrading the furniture in the lounge it was ok but not the most comfortable. All in all we had a great stay and would definitely return if we were to come to Hornsea again

“Please fit a new lock to the front door.”

It's incredibly difficult to open. We had to get some help from the lounge cafe next door to get in. The staff who helped us were lovely and happy to help but even they struggled to get the key to open the lock.

“On the plus side the house was spacious ,handy for the shops and park , the beds were comfortable and the showers fine As with other revues ,which unfortunately we didn't have access to before booking , we found that a lot of the issues had not been addressed .”

The front door lock was always jamming and we had to use the back door when the bar next door was closed ,there were no instructions for the TV etc ,the microwave should have been condemned ,there was no cleaning materials washing up liquid or cloths and the place was in need of a deep clean throughout

“Goid morning, We have been to this property before and the sane issues are still tgere ie The back bedroom window lock is broken, it us a safety issue as well as a security one, especially when children are sleeping in that bedroom.”

The front door lock is definitely faulty, this is a on going problem from previous visits. However more do on this visit as we were unable to open the doir 4 times out of 5 and had yo ask tge owners from the next door bar to help us open tge front door. As we understood we were to contact them if tgere were any issues. I did ask them to sort the front door lock, but was told this would not happen whilst we were there. Unfortunately we had to trail all the children around the back to fet into tge property. This is also a fire risk because had a fire happened in the kitchen, and the front door would not open, we would have no means of escape. We found the problem with the lock impacted on our holiday for the above reasons. The property generally was acceptable cleanliness wise, but it was clear that the fiwnstairs floor had not been hoovered etc it was a job we had yo do before we started our holiday. When we leave we always hoover, clean the bathrooms and fridges etc and strip the beds. Our granddaughter commented tgat we had ckean tge house better than we found it. I'm sorry we have had to bring this to your attention , but the risk of a fire regulations the front door needs to be address ASAP. Regards Sandra Fisher

“Nice property in a great location.”

Furniture wasn't the comfiest and could probably do with updating. The kitchen floor was loose and a bit if a hazard, we did report it. Aside from this we had a great week and I think we would stay here again as I love hornsea and the place is right in the centre of town.

“Disappointing - Definately not 4 Star as advertised - 2 - 3 Star Basic at best.”

Parking a problem as its chargeable car parks or vacant street parking nearby if you can locate it without double yellow's ! No house instuctions for appliances /Wifi Kitchen Microwave doesnt look as if it had been cleaned for quite a while and the kitchen equipment available was the most basic and was well used and needed cleaning before usage. Generally everything looked tired and as if it had been put together on the cheap. Location wise very good on high street amongst all the shops/ restaurants/ bars / supermarkets House would sleep 8 so very spacious - more suited to stag or hen party just looking for somewhere to crash. Upstairs shower was good - downstairs one looked like it needed a clean before usage. When the Bar next door is full or has a party then you can hear all the music blasting through the walls. House is Dog friendly.

“Overview; It’s a large circa 1900 NHS waiting room themed property with large rooms, high ceilings, disused fire places and tiny, built in cupboards in each room, just large enough to store the screams of terror from previous occupants.”

Fortunately it’s been left nice and bland following some sort of raid by the colour and style police and the walls are beautifully finished with white and cream paint, broken up with numerous cracks and the odd mirror or old picture of random crap. After dark this place is enough to give Herman Munster the creeps! Fortunately all of the doors are loose fitting and boast the original door knobs that don’t actually keep the doors from rattling in the wind so it keeps you alert throughout the night if you have the windows open. The door knobs appear to be traditional brass and make your hand smell after use. Please fix this as it could pose a fire risk having a flimsy door knob that is more prone to failure. Not to mention nobody wants a smelly knob in their hand! The new bits; Breaking away from the traditional features there is a tv with a sky box, dumped in the corner of the living room. Granted it doesn’t appear to work, unless you happen to be a Sky-trained engineer!? But it’s there. There’s been a skylight installed on the upper landing which is rather nice and welcomes in precious light to the darker end of the hall and staircase to illuminate the cobwebs the shoddy cleaning team haven’t bothered to dust. The double glazed windows have clearly been installed on a budget and without much thought about appearance, opening options or practicality in a property that is likely to be rather warm in the freak and unlikely event of a British summer. Bedrooms; My last colonoscopy was more comfortable than the beds in this house and a mattress made from bubble wrap would make less noise. As they are all singles, the only thing you’ll be getting your leg over here is the gap between the mattresses. Housekeeping; Moving on to the hygiene (shouldn’t take long as there isn’t any) but yes, from wooden floors and fixtures being scuffed and broken, floors peeling up, mould around each shower and kitchen equipment that would give a colony of badgers TB doesn’t make for a great job! The handrail on the stairs is looser than Kerry Katona and the cooker looks like it’s been bought from Albert Steptoe! It doesn’t really make for great living! Lighting; The lighting throughout is a mix of candle bulbs and fluorescent tubes that make the kitchen feel like a branch of Quick fit. A lamp in one of the rooms fell apart on touch. This has been picked up in previous reviews! Heating; The heating system is particularly loud when in use and needs flushing out. Parking; Parking is workable but if you’re looking for a free-unrestricted space, you’ll need to walk up the road beyond the timed parking bays. Garden; The garden was clearly once a real lush sun trap, but even that needs work to restore it as the furniture is badly weathered and the stones need replacing. Summary; Overall this was once a great house boasting spacious rooms and period features. Unfortunately it’s been allowed to fall into disrepair and is now a sleeping giant with oodles of potential but in urgent need of a refurbishment. I would sympathise with the owners but the cost of the stay is waaay above the quality, including properties available on the sea front with sea views. The feeling within the property is one of “that’ll do”. No, it won’t! They are taking advantage of people and not putting in their end of the deal. Ultimately we were disappointed by the lack of care and upkeep of the property and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. In business, to get something out you must put something in. The owners of this property have clearly forgotten that!

“Cottage was in prefect location and size wise was a good fit for our needs.”

However the advert is deceiving as states that 2 rooms are king size beds that can be unzipped to become twin beds. This was not the case all beds were singles and not zip beds that could be turned into king size. Beds were also in poor repair dips in mattresses, squeaky whenever you moved mean that poor nights sleep was had by all the adults. Cleanliness was also an issue. Evidence of poor dusting and floor cleaning. Also bathrooms not cleaned properly .Also bag of dirty laundry from previous occupants was left in the hall and never collected during our stay. There was a loose floor board in the kitchen by the cooker that caused multiple people multiple times to slip which had the job been on could have caused serious injury. We felt it such a shame as the house has so much potential and could be lovely and the area was prefect for us with local bars and shops etc

“The positives: the location of the property was perfect.”

Easy to unload our luggage and find the car park as mentioned in the booking details. Good size enclosed garden (after the gifts left by the previous occupants dog had been removed). However, now for the negatives: the house was dirty (have photographic evidence of dust/hair/grime, including items left by the previous occupants). The downstairs bathroom was more like a storage room, the shower only managed to heat up to luke warm - not ideal in winter and the toilet is in need of a simple repair, which the owners were made aware of. In the kitchen the oven had to be cleared before it could be used, insufficient glasses for 8 people e.g 6 wine glasses of which 2 were cracked, we purchased 4 wine glasses and have left them for the next occupants, more plates/mugs/utensils would be beneficial. The total lack of mirrors in the bedrooms and a broken lamp in the downstairs bedroom were other examples of the lack of maintenance. If all the negatives were addressed, then this house would be great and value for money. Unfortunately it was disappointing based on the information/photos provided on Sykescottages website.

“House in great location, very spacious.”

The front door lock was very stiff and difficult to lock / open. The key safe was very low down and difficult to get to. Was disappointed with the lack of things provided in kitchen - washing up liquid, kitchen spray, tin foil, kitchen roll, clean dish cloth, washing tablets, coffee (was some in a jar but solid!!) We’ve stayed in other houses through Sykes and all this was provided.

“We really enjoyed our stay.”

The house was ideal for all of 8 of us plus baby and our 2 big dogs. It was quiet every evening as the bar closed early. Lots to do locally. We all found plenty to occupy us there, we had a 3 year old and teenagers with us. Easy to move cars to car park close by to avoid paying for parking. Theres a market on Saturday mornings, so if you park across the road Friday night keep to the left or move your car early! We all said we would go back again.

“Great central location in a lovely large house.”

Close to beach, park, shops and very central we did not use our car at all! Parking was easy to find and very close by and there were no issues with pulling up outside to unload on arrival or load on departure. The house is attached to a very popular wine bar and loud music can clearly be heard in all bedrooms on Friday, Saturday nights until early hours (guest need to be forewarned). Although the house was surface cleaned for our arrival it needs a thorough clean and attention to details such as replacement of sink plug in toilet hand wash basin, flush in downstairs bathroom, broken coffee tables and lamps without bulbs etc. With just a little investment of time and some small detail changes this could make a real difference to the impression of cleanliness and comfort. However, the beds were very comfy with clean linen & towels provided. It would have been nice to have a good kitchen broom and some quality cookware for those of us who want to self-cater. The outside area needs attention to make sitting out a comfortable option. Tiny gravel pieces were difficult for dogs and may be problematic for small children. The garden furniture needs repair. There were lots of cigarette ends in the gravel which had not been cleared for some time. With some small changes and bit of attention to cleaning detail this is a great value property for a large family get away. Despite the honest review we had a fab week and would happily return.

“4th time we have stayed at this cottage, it has everything we need and the location is superb.”

The cottage itself hasnt changed at all, apart from the seating in the living room, which in all honesty isnt very comfortable, although we tended to stay in the kitchen and outside as the weather was fine. There is a bar next door which has only recently opened since we visited last, which i believe the owners of the cottage actually own as well, and whilst we stayed did not anything from the bar at all, in fact i think it closed early on the nights we stayed, so no issues there. The only gripe i would convey, and in all honesty has nothing to do with the owners, is the parking situation. Although there is free parking across the street, cinema street, its only 3 hours at a time and no return within an hour, so we all had to play at moving cars all day, which isnt fun whilst you are at the beach!! So keep that in mind. All in all, it didn't disappoint. P.s ive not mentioned anything about kitchen utensils or cooker as we never used any and just ate out!!!

“Front door lock needs attention .”

Table in lounge broken . Lamp in lounge works sometimes ! Furniture really uncomfortable , very student like. Cleanliness not brilliant . Pots pans ets not enough for a group of 8 , only 3 very small saucepans, no colander and only 1 oven tray etc. A lock or bolt on the back gate would make you feel more secure. Table outside broken at one end and only 7 chairs . Courtyard very unappealing for socialising and loads of cigarette butts in the chippings , yuk ! No book for how anything works etc. The noise from functions at the next door wine bar , which is owned also by the house owner , totally unacceptable . You can’t hear the tv in the lounge on the highest when the party is in full swing . If you’re unlucky enough to get the downstairs bedroom , oh dear , just shut yourself in the kitchen while it’s over to dull the beat , although you will still hear the songs ! The plus is the location in town and close to the park and beach .

We were aware before we travelled there was a wine bar next door but hadnt realised how loud the music would be.We couldnt get to sleep before midnight.There was a band on one night and a DJ the next.It thumped through the wall and we struggled to even watch the tv.

“I stayed here with my 5 kids whose age range is 4-16.”

Unfortunately one of the bedrooms wasn't made up for us so we had to work around that straight off. Also, as has been said in other reviews, the house wasn't as clean as I would like - the cutlery drawer, cups, toilets and couches were of particular concern for me. There also needs to be a book with info on how things work, the TV wouldn't switch on for example (remote didnt seem to work) and eventually I found a button on it. I needed to put the heating on one morning as we were really cold, had to figure that out - there is a gas fire in the lounge but I didnt want to touch that! This all said, the house worked for us; it’s ideally situated within the little town and we were very happy enough staying here for a week. I would recommend it.

No book found of what to do etc. Could do with a barbecue. Fire alarms are very sensitive when toaster and oven rings are on making breakfast. Kept going off. Love the place though for our family get together. 2nd time been at house and will definitely return again next year

“Fantastic cottage.”

Towards the beach end of hornsea, opposite is a large park to walk the dogs in, with children's play area. The cottage is well furnished with everything you need. Having a down stairs bedroom toilet and shower was great for my wife as she has athritus and has difficultly getting up and down stairs. The kitchen is well equipped with tools and cutlery that work. All sorts of shops around great location and the owners are only a phone call away if you have any problems. Haye already booked to again next year and really looking forward to it.

“The house and garden is lovely and spacious.”

Even with 8 of us we weren't on top of each other. It was a squeeze for us all to eat together round the table but we managed. It just wasn't cleaned well enough before our arrival. The kitchen floor was mucky and there was dust built up with lots of dog hair especially under settee's and beds. There was a poster on the wall saying due covid all the floors had been thoroughly cleaned sadly this was not the case. The cooker inside was also not very clean. There was even a greasy tray left inside. We couldn't turn the heating off by the dial so phoned the contact number who helped us. Turned out to be broken so we were advised to change the boiler setting to hot water only which worked fine. It wasn't cold so wasn't a problem. The beds were a little hard for our taste but very generous in size, the pillows are comfortable. The kitchen is well equipped with everything we needed and it was a lovely gesture to be provided with milk, bread and chocolates. No parking at the property but we got got parked on a street down the road not too far away. We would definitely stay here again.

We are terribly sorry for this issue you had to experience during your stay. This is most definitely not to our normal standards. Due to urgent family circumstances, we were unable to tend to the property and check on the changeover and our usual cleaner was not in operation at the time, therefore, we had a to rely on a cleaner that we have never used before. We have since arranged for a plumber to tend to the property a replace the thermostat to prevent this happening again. Our existing cleaner is back in operation and we are confident this would not happen again. Thank you for bringing this to our attention and for your thoughts. “The house was in a really good location for the beach and town center.”

There is a nice garden area and a useful staorage area for bikes etc. The house was well equipped, just could do with a colander ( it was broken) a sieve, washing up bowl and some more pads to put hot pans on. The oven needs to be on for quite a well before it starts to cook. Although the showers were hot enough it was difficult for both showers, others taps to be used at the same time, the water pressure seemed to effect this. Having a bedroom down stairs was great because the dog could sleep near and so we didn't need to worry about keeping her downstais. The beds were very comfy, we slept really well. Although it is only loading and unloaing outside there are 2 car parks near by. One was free at the time we needed. Opposite there is a lovely park which was great for dog walking and for the children. The beaches are good. Dog friendly beach near by. The fish and chip shops have good opening times and there is a dog friendly cafe practically next door. It would have been useful to have some information available ( ususally there is a book with info in i.e. stop tap in case of emergencies etc) but I believe that there is someone near by in case of emergencies like that. We would recommend both Sykes and this property. ( Customers just need to be made aware of the £150 bond so that they can plan for that in case of any problems).

“There were 2 smart TVs, not 5 as advertised.”

There is now only one free carpark opposite to the left which is very small and always full. The other to the right is now a maximum stay of 3 hours with no return within an hour. Ended up paying for parking 10 minutes walk away from the property. Books, games cushions and throws had not been removed which we expected would have been due to Covid. These are the negatives but all in all we had a lovely stay in Hornsea although the weather was not as good as it has been.

“We spent a week here in August 2020, 8 of us with ages ranging from 6 – 67.”

Hornsea is a lovely little town and the weather was sunny and warm which made all the difference. Parking is free if you can get in the small car park across the road; if not it’s pay and display or find a free space on a road five minutes’ walk away. The beach is a 10 minute walk, a large park with fab skate park and lovely play area is just across the road behind the church, the town is right on the doorstep and the Mere is only a ten minute walk away. The house was a slight disappointment, a bit cobwebby and dusty on arrival which was surprising during Covid times, and then we found things weren’t working – broken clothes horse and kitchen knife, dirty barbeque, no bulbs for the stand alone lamp in the lounge, a few rickety garden chairs and no hairdryer (after apparently one blew up a while back), only 2 TVs after advertising 5 on the Sykes website, limited kitchen crockery, a lack of bedside tables and bedside lights and thick winter duvets on beds in the height of summer left us feeling the owners could make so much more of the house if they chose to, but the location was perfect.

“We always use Skye’s cottages to take away 6 OAP who are all related to get together and spend time.”

This was an unusual situation with the Coronavirus and shortage of food, but we still had a fantastic time in Hornsea. Did not use public transport but used the pubs, cafes and restaurants but made sure we were away from everyone. Lovely walks from the house to the beach and around the town and bird sanctuary. Everyone in Hornsea are so friendly, will be back next year to experience the surrounding areas.

“Newbegen Cottage has been recently been converted into holiday let.”

It has been tastely updated to provide very spacious comfortable accommodation. It sleeps 8 in 4 double rooms. It is dog friendly our dog Baxter had a great time especially with enclosed rear garden. The garden is a sun trap. Unexpected positives where huge main bedroom with large screen smart tv. Another similar tv in sitting room complete with 3 seatees. There was a washing machine and line in garden. It is situated in center of Hornsea close to shops,cafes,pubs restaurants. Easy walk to beach and Mere. The owner was very helpful and quickly sorted a small problem we had. This is our forth holiday to Hornsea we have always had good accommodation but NEWBEGIN COTTAGE is top of list especially at present prices.

“Just returned from this beautiful cottage we stayed 3 nights in the 4 bedroom property.”

It’s very spacious and has some lovely pieces of furniture. There is a lovely garden at the back of the property which was a sun trap and was lucky with the weather so we we were able to make the most of it. There’s a lovely lounge with 3 sofas and a huge television that offered sky, plus free use of the Internet was much appreciated. 2 bathrooms certainly come in handy when there is more than one couple. We met the owner who was friendly and helpful a welcome pack was available with tea, coffee, milk bread and much more but if you require more there is a co-op supermarket opposite and a bakery close by. There’s lots to do in the town with the beach close by and lots of restaurants and bars and shops. Further afield you can get to Beverley, Bridlington Hull and many other places of interest. We thoroughly enjoyed our break and would return

For even more luscious land, head further afield to the Flamborough Headland Heritage Coast, with two golf clubs, the RSPB Bempton Cliffs Seabird Centre, and lots of lovely coastal eateries, it’s a lovely place to spend a day out on the coast of Yorkshire.

Bridlington 15 miles.

The pretty seaside town of Hornsea lies on the East Coast, 15 miles south of Bridlington. This old Victorian resort has long, wide, safe sandy beaches and an attractive promenade with well-kept gardens, ideal for families. The bustling town centre has an old-fashioned feel with a good variety of small shops, pubs and cafes, whilst nearby Hornsea Mere is the largest natural lake in Yorkshire and offers sailing, fishing and boat trips. Hornsea Freeport is popular for shopping, whilst Bempton Cliffs RSPB reserve can be reached in just over half an hour's drive, offering one of the largest mainland puffin populations in Britain. Hornsea is near to Wassand Hall and walled gardens and provides a good base for touring the Yorkshire Wolds, the North York Moors and the East Riding coastal resorts. The historic city of York and The Deep at Hull are within an easy drive.
