“Crooked Cottage was quirky, as advertised, and that was part of its charm.”
It was very well prepared for our arrival, and we appreciated the fresh-cut flowers and the food and drink offerings that welcomed us. It was ideal for two, with a small back yard and table and chairs, surrounded by a bank of container flowers and some stone walling. A great retreat, and an opportunity to meet the neighbours, if you wish. Our one reservation about the cottage was the two flights of narrow stairs - plenty to hold on to, but possibly a challenge for the elderly, infirm or disabled.
The Cottage was ideally located in a quiet part of the village, but only two or three minutes' walk from shops and the King's Head Hotel, a friendly venue which serves excellent meals. Everyday needs are well served by the local shops, and the local pharmacy even sells "medicinal" wine! Kirkbymoorside is a delightful, characterful, historic small town with a Wednesday market. It attracts visitors, but is not inundated with them! It's also an ideal base for touring the North Yorkshire Moors and Whitby, where we commuted to the Folk festival a couple of times, and were able to park centrally - in peak season! - by arriving early and breakfasting there. It's a 45 minute drive, but passes quickly and pleasantly enough with so much moorland scenery to enjoy en route.
