“Unusual and delightful accommodation in the centre of this charming town.”
Situated only yards away from the stunning Beverley Minster and within a couple of minutes walk of the pedestrianised town centre, 36 Highgate is an apartment furnished in a cottage like style, fully in sympathy with its surroundings. The sitting room is dual aspect and affords stunning views of the Minster, which is illuminated at night. I was there in March and found the apartment to be warm and comfortable as well as offering all the basic facilities for self-catering.
For those wishing to eat out, there is an excellent choice of restaurants and pavement cafés in the two market squares and the pedestrianised streets that link them. A wide variety of shops are within immediate reach. There is a pub just across the road set in a building dating from the early medieval period and another pub (the White Horse, known to the locals as 'Nellies') that has barely changed from late Victorian times, has a labyrinth of small rooms with open fires and is still gas lit.
The Minster itself is a truly exceptional church of Cathedral proportions, one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in England and a focal point for a variety of musical performances and cultural activities. There is also another fine medieval parish church, St. Mary's, at the opposite end of the town centre, about ten minutes walk away.
The owner is exceptionally welcoming and takes great care to cater for the individual needs of her guests. A real gem, and somewhere that I have pencilled in for many repeat visits.
