“A cosy and very comfortable cottage in a great location.”

This cottage has maintained its historical feel, having original features and beamed ceilings. Great for dogs too, outdoor area very secure. Very comfortable bed and sofa, ideal after long walks. Kitchen well equipped, but needs more teaspoons. The owner was very helpful too. I would recommend unpacking car at the top car park and walking across the top to the steps down to cottage. Unloading the car on the street causes frustration with the locals and is in my opinion easier to walk down than up with bags.

“Lovely comfortable cottage couple of improvements been made refresh and WiFi very good lovely stay beds made up beautiful.”

Only negatives hand towel rail holder fell off as I put a hand towel on it, no grill rack in grill pan blinds bit dusty outside could be bit prettier few pots instead of just stareing at big bins and concrete when sat outside fake trellis would soften the atmosphere up a bit and requires no maintenance but overall still lovely old cottage.

Grimes cottage had everything we needed and the Wi-Fi, which is very important to us, was excellent. The rear seating area was an added bonus proving a comfortable relaxing outdoor space. I wouldn’t hesitate to return, or recommend this cottage in beautiful Staithes to my family and friends.

“A true gem of a place.”

It’s clean, cosy with a lovely outside area and had all we needed. No wifi, we knew, but a few steps up the path or a visit to the pub(preferable) sorted that! I’d love to return in the Winter and experience the log fire. I had an issue, entirely my fault, and the caretakers were so helpful. A word of warning, however. This is an historic fisherman's cottage, floorboards creek and walls not entirely straight with decor in keeping. Staithes is traditional and hilly, with seagulls and brilliant pubs to boot. It offers that true authentic charm, so if you’re looking for a modern apartment holiday you will be disappointed. Would definitely return and thank you again to Keith the caretaker for helping a damsel in distress!

“This property is the worst we have ever stayed in, Dust everywhere, sticky furniture, bathroom tiles around bath full of grime.”

When stripping bed for the cleaners it revealed the state of the quilt which is full of stains, the valence looks like it’s never been washed ..disgusting! On the mattress protector there is a blood stain. This place needs a deep clean with professional cleaners!! Desperately needs updating. Staithes is a beautiful place to visit . The Cod and Lobster delicious food.

“We have already left a hand written letter with the owner.”

My sister and I were so disappointed with the state of the accommodation. Basically the house was grubby and dirty and there was even mould in the bathroom. What did not help was that it is painfully obvious that sea gulls and their excrement dominate the area. This is understandable as Staithes is by the sea bit what is not acceptable is that the owners, or their representatives, have made no effort to clear up the mess left by the sea gulls. The rear courtyard was unusable due to the excrement both on the ground and on the furniture. On approaching the house the flower pots on each side were totally neglected and gave a very poor first impression. Surfaces throughout the house were dirty and sticky and even the table mats stuck to the table. Kitchen pans were disgusting and need replacing. The mould in the bathroom (base of bath and tiles) was clearly visible and we have photos of it. In essence the house was unkempt and had clearly not been cleaned properly. We would have expected some sort of welcome pack as this has been normal for us at other rentals. Least of our worries was that there was only one wine glass!! My sister and I spend a few days every year renting a cottage somewhere in the UK and this accommodation was by far the worst we have experienced. Grimes Cottage by name - Grime by nature! We are so sorry to hear of your disappointment. Our aim is always to make sure that our guests are happy and well looked after, so this is disappointing to us too. When information is sent out, by the caretakers, it is very clear that they are happy to help with any issues at all and are in a very prominent, easy place to find, in the village. They are on hand almost 24/7 and do state this clearly. Without a doubt they would have been keen to rectify any problems you found, immediately, had you brought them to their attention straight away instead of just prior to leaving. Many other guests have commented on their helpfulness. Going by your note, before we checked in the cottage, 6 new wine glasses were purchased, only to find there were already several in the cottage. The team would have helped you find those in the cupboard, or given you some extras, had you asked. The gulls at this time of year are rife. That is part of the charm of Staithes. The yard is pressure washed on a very regular basis but it can be done one minute and straight away is as bad again at the moment, unfortunately. Staithes cottages are all very old and can look unclean when really it's age. The cleaner is conscientious and cares deeply about the cottage. However, if you really felt it was genuinely unclean it was a simple matter to let someone know and it would have been recleaned, without fuss. We couldn't find the mould mentioned and thoroughly checked the pans. These too seem perfectly fine. We are truly are sorry that you didn't enjoy the cottage and do wish you had given us the opportunity to change that for you. Property Owner

“A very welcome and comfortable cottage for our first stay in Staithes.”

It is up the hill a bit and given the limited vehicle access in Staithes you will have to carry any luggage a fair way so do travel as light as possible. Overall Grimes Cottage was an ideal stay for us and our 2 dog and the secure back yard for them to go out was a real bonus. Given we were first time visitors, the communication and advice from the owners who live nearby was also very good and helpful. Would happily go back there again.

“Loved the cottage, situated more or less halfway between the carpark and the Cod and Lobster on a side pathway.”

Good for walking the dog either way. We picked a bad week, strong cold winds and rain, only a fleeting glance of the sun, but we enjoyed the break and able to chill out. Everything we needed was in the cottage, just needed to get used to the steps, and unfortunately we were unable to sit out side due to the weather. Maybe next time, Thanking you

“The cottage is a lovely building.”

However furnishings, fixtures and fittings quite shabby. My husband made a few repairs while we were there, he refitted handle of log burner door as there wasn’t one on. He fixed the back door, I got locked out because the door didn’t open from the outside. There was a bulb out in the bathroom, the shower hose was split and leaking. The light fitting on the landing was hanging by a wire. Staithes itself is beautiful.

“We had a lovely week in Grimes Cottage.”

It's a great base to explore the area from - we walked on the coastal path both north and south from Staithes. We enjoyed playing on the beach and exploring the rock pools and watching the sunsets from the end of the breakwaters. We left our car at the top of the hill and didn't use it all week - parking is a bit frustrating as you have to renew it every day online and there is no signal in the house, but we managed. The house is everything it is says it is and the kitchen is well equipped although we ate out a lot - recommend the Cod & Lobster and also the takeaway pizza from Cobbles.

Very dirty throughout. A nest of ants were present in the corner of the twin room below a hole in the roof which had been leaking and needed fixing. Overall the cottage needs some repair work and a thorough cleaning.

We had to remove slugs from the wall in the childrens bedroom, rubble was in the corner of the room. Window sill, shelves not clean. Frying pan was filthy, very disappointed with the cleanliness of the house, spent half the day cleaning up.

The back yard space was a bonus; the lit burner cosy on the wildest day. Single beds quite comfy- don't know what the fuss is about. Booked car park space at Glen Vale- they were very helpful. In fact parked there and carried bags down the footpath in two trips- did n't want to face the hill. Sainsbury's driver did though...Loved it. Will come back.

“A lovely cottage in an ideal location just set back from the High Street away from the any noise but close enough for a short walk to the harbour, shops and pubs!”

Views of the harbour from both the living room and bedrooms, with pretty much everything you need for a pleasant and enjoyable stay. Would we return, most definitely however there are a few snags that must be rectified, in particular the mattresses on the single beds in the twin room. These were awful and almost ruined the holiday as even the kids aged 14 and 9 complained about how uncomfortable they were. Other minor snags were mentioned to the lovely couple that manage the property so we hope they are rectified, such as: Leaking Roof in twin room - By the eaves it slowly dripped water Wheelie Bins - Haven't been emptied for some time, more than the 2 weeks as they smelled pretty bad and were getting maggots Bath plug - Need a knife or long nails to prise it out Shower lead - Needs replacing Toilet Roll holder - Hanging off Garden / Yard - Needs to be cleaned with something like Jeyes fluid as you could smell pet waste Windows - Only a few opened and it felt a bit stuffy and damp, in need of air. It states open the windows where you can but they've been glossed over Finally, whilst it advertises as no parking or wifi, it would really benefit from having a parking space at Bank Top or somewhere up there, I wouldn't have minded paying the extra as it cost me £6 per day anyway, but was a pain sat around waiting for a free space. I loved the fact there was no internet, but with no phone signal as well, during Covid-19 this makes it terribly difficult to plan and book into locations as it meant we had to travel to the pub to steal their wifi to book into places or telephone. It sounds more negative than positive, trust me it wasn't it was a lovely, memorable break away with the family. All that is needed to elevate it is some minor attention, I'm sure you would be able to charge more as well for the privilege.

“You need to read the feed back and act upon it.”

Most of the cottage was covered in thick dust. One main light bulb was broken and one in the bedroom missing completely. (Should have been checked ) The beds in the second bedroom are still really bad as previously mentioned by a number of previous guests. We first stayed in this cottage 7 years ago but not again. It is a very tired holiday cottage. The chest of draws in the main bedroom has broken draws in the second bedroom they were dirtier on the inside than on the outside. You might want to check on the slug living in the second bedroom. The kitchen had a note asking us to water the plants- what plants every plant pot was growing weeds and stinging nettles. I did cut these down as we wanted to sit outside. You expect bird mess with so many seagulls around but this was the only cottage with bins and the front door caked in it. None of the windows in the lounge would open nor the main one in the kitchen, we had lovely weather but the only way to get air into the lounge was to sit with the front and back doors open. The crockery is a miss match from the local jumble. We managed to find four dinner plates but one was chipped. We bought 4 mugs and donated them at the end of the week. As far as extra cleaning regarding covid 19 I think someone needs to learn the basics of what a duster can do. In 7 years the walls have been painted and the wall art changed but the cottage is no longer presents as your pictures on line show. It is tired, run down and in desperate need of some TLC.

“The family that we were going with were told by Sykes a couple of weeks before that their cottage had been sold!”

! They ended up having to stay in Whitby which caused alot of travelling for us all and cost in petrol not to mention inconvenience!! We met the new owners of the cottage who said they moved in a month ago!! We booked this on Jan 19 to ensure we weren't disappointed! Sykes let us down on a previous holiday in Cornwall in a similar way so we will not be using them again! The picture on the listing has red arrow pointing to the wrong property too. The cottage is lovely. Needs a good clean. Smells of dogs. Carpets need a professional clean. Dog hairs all over in upstairs bedroom. Kitchen well stocked with pots etc. Great position and back yard area great for dogs too. Not great if you have mobility issues as Staithes is all hills and steps. Staithes is a beautiful place and would highly recommend this cottage as a place to stay.

“Cottage was extremely difficult to get to.”

We had to walk down either very steep steps or a very steep hill. We had 3yr old child with us. The cottage is not suitable for very young children due to the difficult walk to get to it. We had to pay £5 per day to park the car as you can't park in the village. Which confused us as there is residents parking. Surely the cottage should have a spot. We had no hot water or heating the whole time we were there. We got round it by using dishwasher, electric shower and wood burner in lounge.

Had regular information and reminders on the run up to the holiday. Able to email the owner of the cottage directly and questions were answered almost immediately. The cottage was in Staithes, N.Yorkshire near Whitby. It was a stunning location. A quaint little harbour village. A single narrow cobbled street, with a couple of pubs and and shops. The cottage was a former fisherman's cottage full of original features. It was cosy and warm with a log burner.

“We had a lovely time in Staithes so overall it was a good place to stay and cottage was perfectly adequate for the price and what we needed.”

So please don’t take this as complaints but here are some suggestions from us: -twin beds were pretty uncomfortable as spring in mattress was digging into our back. You would agree if you slept on the beds. I would suggest to put some mattress pad if you don’t want replace them - no Wi-fi was fine if we get normal reception in the house. We had 3 different mb services between us and no one had any service. We can’t even make or receive a call unless we go to the pub to use their wifi. - water pressure was very strange and had difficulty to run the bath even we left a tap half open. -boiler didn’t work on Saturday and had no heating for a while. -drains outside smells pretty bad - please check all light bulbs are working -understand you can unload at the bottom of the hill. But it wasn’t clear how far we have to park and steep hill and steps to carry all the luggage to the cottage.

A delightful, Grade II listed period cottage, tucked away in a quiet location in the ancient coastal village of Staithes.

Enjoying elevated views across the rooftops to the harbour and beyond, this terraced cottage provides the perfect holiday home for families wanting to explore the dramatic coastline and the stunning scenery of the North York Moors National Park.

This traditional cottage offers comfortable, characterful accommodation with the spacious sitting room boasting beautiful wood panelling and exposed stone and beams, whilst the warming woodburning stove invites guests to have cosy nights in!

This cottage has a bathroom and a well-equipped kitchen with dining area on the ground floor, whilst upstairs via steep stairs are two tastefully furnished bedrooms.

Outside is a private, enclosed rear courtyard, which is the perfect place to spend a summer's evening with a glass of wine.

Just a two minute walk away is the centre of the village where you find narrow, cobbled streets and alleyways, an historic harbour, beach, local inns, tea rooms and shops, or you may wish to enjoy a bracing walk on the Cleveland Way clifftop trail.

The old spa town of Saltburn lies a few miles north and is worth a visit, with its pretty gardens, working pier and cliff lift, and to the south is the bustling seaside town of Whitby, which boasts long, sandy beaches, an imposing abbey and famous fish and chips!

With the spectacular countryside to discover and numerous attractions nearby, this cottage is well placed for a wonderful holiday in the North York Moors.

STAITHES

Whitby 10 miles.

The charming and sleepy seaside village of Staithes, with its cobbled streets and back alleys, is something of an artist’s dream. Its pretty houses and cottages are clustered around the old harbour and surrounded by high craggy cliffs on three sides, with a sheltered sandy beach set amongst the rocky coastline. The village can claim connections with Captain Cook who was apprenticed to a draper near the harbour. Nowadays, Staithes is a must for anyone visiting the Yorkshire Coast and has a good selection of pubs, shops and tea rooms. Staithes is still home to an RNLI lifeboat station and a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) landing fish, crab and lobster, with boat trips for birdwatching, fishing and even whale watching available. It’s also the location of the popular BBC children’s TV series, Old Jack’s Boat. Staithes has a strong attraction for artists, with an annual Art and Heritage Festival, galleries and artists studios with art courses and workshops regularly on offer. There’s a free Illusion Trail, which guides visitors around the network of ginnels (alleyways), with trail guides available locally. The best views of the town can be enjoyed from the Cleveland Way which runs down the cliff to the sea’s edge. Altogether a superb base for exploring the Yorkshire Coast, visiting the larger resorts of Whitby or Scarborough and enjoying the moorland villages of the North York Moors National Park.
