“We’ve just come back from a brilliant week at Ellerby Lane House, booked through Sykes Holiday Cottages.”
As a family of five, we found the house warm, cosy, and exactly as described. It was really well-equipped, with plenty of cups, glasses, and kitchen kit, and everything was clean and fresh, including bedding and towels.
There was a WiFi issue during our stay, which felt like the end of the world for our two teenagers! However, the owner was really helpful and shared the WiFi code for the shop downstairs. It was a bit slow, but it did the job and kept the kids ticking over. That said, we were ...

There was a WiFi issue during our stay, which felt like the end of the world for our two teenagers! However, the owner was really helpful and shared the WiFi code for the shop downstairs. It was a bit slow, but it did the job and kept the kids ticking over. That said, we were out exploring or enjoying meals most of the time, so it didn’t really affect us much.
Just a couple of things future guests should be aware of – not complaints, more heads-up:
• Noise: It’s very noisy in the early mornings with deliveries to nearby shops and pubs, plus a gang of seagulls that love the roof. If you’re a light sleeper, like me, don’t expect long lie-ins!
• Entrance area: The house entrance is tucked down a small alley where locals seem to gather for a smoke. This means there are quite a few cigarette butts around – not something the owner can control, but worth knowing.
Parking in Whitby is a real challenge. We ended up using the Station Car Park near the Co-op and Church Lane Car Park. Both get full fast, so aim to park up early or late and just leave the car parked for your stay.
Despite those minor things, Ellerby Lane House itself was spot-on – we couldn’t fault it. We’d highly recommend it to others and would definitely return for another stay.
