“What an amazing little quirky cottage.”

A proper little Tardis, easily big enough for 6 of us. Very comfy beds, and everything you'll need for a comfortable stay. It's position is amazing too - half way up a hill, half way down it, fab for Whitby. We'd definitely stay here again in the future.

“Stayed at this property for 2 nights, was easy to find, great location, shops and beach were only a 5 minute walk from the property.”

The property was clean and tidy, plenty of room for 6 of us, fully equipped kitchen, decent sized bedrooms, only negative on the bedroom side was that the door frame on one of the attic rooms was quite low especially as we are all quite tall so we did bump our heads a few times but apart from that all the bedrooms were very spacious and airy. Lovely cosy living room with plenty of seating for the 6 of us, excellent idea with the Now TV, plenty on it for everyone to watch. All in all we had a wonderful stay, if there is one negative I can pick up on is a few of the windows were a bit hard to open. The blinds in the bedrooms did cause a bit of disturbance during the night when the windows were open and there was a breeze, they kept banging on the frame which caused a bit of a disturbed sleep but that is the only other negative. Would definitely recommend this cottage, my son would love to come and stay in this cottage again should we visit Whitby in the future.

“Lovely cottage, clean and well maintained.”

Beds were very comfortable, kitchen well equipped. It would have been nice to have a pint of milk and some tea/coffee so that we could have had a cup of tea when we got there but that’s a minor quibble. All in all it was a fabulous little cottage, freshly decorated with a really historic feel. I was quite worried after reading the previous reviews but we had a wonderful stay and wouldn’t hesitate to book the cottage again. Parking IS an issue close by, but that’s usual for Whitby. We were able to unload and load the car without issues and parked in Cliff Street car park which is a short and fairly level walk away. I’d say anyone staying in Whitby needs to factor in the fact that they will likely need to pay for quite a lot of parking. Noise - given the position of the cottage and the lack of double glazing (original windows) there was some noise from passers-by. I didn’t notice any noise from the pub opposite (great atmosphere and good live acts). The seagulls were loud, but if you’re staying in a harbour town you’re going to get seagulls. Definitely recommend the property.

“There are a few Positives for this property which I will mention - Location - ideal for town, beach and sea area; Cleanliness - clean, fresh bedding and towels; Bathroom and kitchen, clean with very clean appliances.”

Unfortunately I also need to mention the Negatives - I understand that the property is very old, however that doesn’t account for broken door panels, crumbling steps into downstairs toilet and rain pouring into kitchen above window where we had to place a bucket to catch the water. Also we were led to believe this was a pet friendly property with a small outside space - the outside space is very, very small and it is also very unkempt. When we arrived it had two small patio chairs and a table which filled the space and were all very dirty. The whole tiny outside space was dirty and I had to brush it before I would allow my small dogs to go out. I really feel Sykes should view this outside space as it cannot be classed as such. Another area which future occupants need to be made aware of is parking. The nearest parking is by the local Co-op which is quite a walk away and costs £10 per 24hrs - individuals may want to consider this when costing for their holiday. We enjoyed our holiday and we love Whitby and all it has to offer but this property doesn’t compare with other holiday properties we have enjoyed with Sykes.

“This is the third time my family have booked this property.”

We knew from the first two stays that it needed a great deal of TLC in terms of painting and decorating and that it was extremely basic but the layout of the property and the location outweighed the negatives.-just. We will not be booking this property again and are disappointed that Sykes do not carry out any form of QA in order to provide accurate descriptions of properties. There is paint flaking off walls in every room-severely so. The door of the main living area had a hole punched through it. The kitchen sink was damaged. The property is dirty. The outside area is not fit for anyone to be-walls, floor and garden furniture were green with moss. It is such a shame that this listed building would be so neglected-so much potential as a holiday property.

“Thanks for an amazing time, we loved the fact it was so central to all amenities.”

There was five of us staying and had plenty of space. The only downside was parking because there were two cars needing somewhere to park only one could use the parking zone indicated, we did find somewhere to park for free in the end so problem solved. Would definitely stay again.

“Absolutely abysmal.”

Dirty and unkempt. Wasted so much of my time complaining about this to Sykes already. We will never be staying with you again you are appalling and your customer service is a disgrace. As long as I live, I will try to tell everyone I meet about how unhelpful you have been and also how disgusting your approach to helping us was, you were non-existent and when contacted we about as much use as a chocolate fire guard.

“Afternoon the property is in a great location and we will be booking it again soon the few little things that let it down was the sink in the kitchen was broken around the plug waste so it wouldn't hold water in it.”

Also the hot tap in the ground floor toilet sink wouldn't turn off properly so was wasting quite a bit of water. Also one of the fire alarms kept beeping intermittently. Minor things really and easy to fix. Thanks Craig. T

“A really good stay, a shame about the leaking toilet and broken window pane in dining room which is a security issue.”

Beds very comfy, everything we needed in kitchen was present. Maintenance man very freindly and informative (his number was on communications), however he did say he wasn't sure why his number was on there. Great location, easy use key safe. Overall a lovely stay.

“Hi, as we reported while we were there, the roller blinds in both top bedrooms won't open or close, the cords are broken.”

Also we couldn't sleep as no bedroom blinds are blackout. I recommend you replace the broken blinds for blackout blinds, and put blackout curtains in the other 2 bedrooms- there are poles. Also we only had 6 pillows, and most were very thin, 2 pillows each are recommended. Also there are only 3 placemats. Also, paint is flaking off the walls everywhere, it needs seeing to, and one of the panes of glass is smashed and has been temporarily repaired with some plywood, in the back door and this looks very unsightly.

“The property needs to be alot clearer on the parking situation and the access to the property.”

We were unaware that there would be no where to park briefly to be able to unload and repack the car up so ended up parking in the harbour car park as this was the closest car park with spaces and then drag all our luggage up a very steep hill to the property. Once arriving the steps and ramp to the property are also very narrow and would be unsuitable for anybody not able bodied. The property itself felt damp, only one setting on the washing machine worked and the dryer on the washer/dryer doesn't work. The property was very dusty with cobwebs on all the ceilings. One of my children cut her foot open on the stairs and the beds were very uncomfortable and lumpy. The rail in the bathroom is loose so when you take the shower off the holder it falls off. The property advised to use orange bags for recycling and blue for normal rubbish but neither had been left. There was also not a laundry bag left as advised to put the washing in at the end of the stay. The pub opposite has live music/karaoke until 12pm during the week and 1am on a Friday and Saturday making it impossible to sleep before at least 2am once everyone has left and walked past the property as it was extremely noisy. Unfortunately also due to the pub being right opposite the property most morning the path outside the property had vomit on it which isn't the nicest thing to have to deal with. We would definitely not stay in this property again or recommend it to anyone.

“My partner and I had a great break the cottage quaint the information not what it could have been with regards to unloading the car.”

There is a disk parking scheme but we didn't have the relevant information and I managed to get a parking ticket within the first 10 minutes with a cost of £25 with early payment should have had a sticker attached saying welcome to Whitby, good job I have a sense of humour but apart from that we had a great break.

“Property in a good central location, easily accessed on arrival.”

Kitchen has everything you need and lots of cupboard space for storage. Very comfortable for just the 2 of us and our dog. 3 settees in the lounge and large double bedrooms with plenty of drawers and cupboards. Cleanliness was very good apart from the very small seating area in the yard. You are advertising this as an outside seating area and therefore it needs to be kept to the same standard as inside ,all the furniture and the little yard area needs attention. Visitors need to understand the difference between discs and scratch cards for parking, we got a ticket which we will contest when we were unloading on arrival. The property is very noisy ( which is stated) from traffic and the pub so don’t expect to get much sleep.

The only thing was not so accurate was the yard being somewhere to have coffee in for two people. It was ok for my 2 pomeranians to use while getting ready to go out etc. I would recommend anyone to stay here though.

“Had a perfect weekend in this cottage.”

It has enough space for six people to enjoy, particularly the dining room, where we enjoyed wonderful meals with our party of friends. The beds were lovely and comfortable. You can really feel the history of the building from all the quirky old woodwork throughout the cottage and it is in a perfect setting to enjoy all the delights of Whitby.

“The heating and hot water did not work.”

The landlord told us there had been no problems with the heating since March, three previous reviews (written after we had booked), mentioned problems with the heating and hot water. The heating and hot water were fixed on the third day of our stay. The plumber was courteous and efficient. The house had not been properly cleaned. I had to heat kettles of water to wash pots up before we could have a cup of tea on arrival. I eventually washed every pot and glass in the house and sufficient pans for our use during our time there.There were problems with cleanliness in every room of the house. Examples of this were urine stains on the downstairs toilet and an extremely soiled towel discarded on the wardrobe floor in the main bedroom. Our food had to be kept fully wrapped the fridge because it was dirty. The house was properly cleaned during the late afternoon of the second day of our stay, after we requested that the property be cleaned . The cleaners who came were shocked by the state of the house, and were extremely helpful in putting matters right. It goes without saying that given additional concerns about the transmission of COVID-19, the lack of initial cleanliness is worrying. There was scaffolding up the side of the house, which made the dining room very dark and made entering and exiting the property cramped. The pub across the road was very noisy over the bank holiday weekend. It was imperative to use earplugs to get to sleep. Fortunately we had brought some with us. It is important to state in the listing how proximate the pub is. The decor was different to the photos on the Sykes website. The downstairs accommodation now has three black leatherette settees , two black coffee tables and steal grey carpet. It is cold and impersonal and no longer a cosy cottage. The small sitting out area, was dank, dismal, with old dirty wicker chairs and cigarette butts and debris. It was not conducive to sitting outside with a morning coffee as suggested in the description. We were provided with clean linen and the beds were comfortable. All the kitchen appliances worked and the kitchen was well equipped. The Sykes staff were responsive and courteous. We were eventually offered a partial refund, which we have accepted.

The cottage was quirky and clean, wasn’t impressed with scaffolding going in the middle of are holiday which made access more difficult especially with elderly parents ,plus I don’t know how you can call that a courtyard to sit in and enjoy a coffee ,also had problems with the hot water as others have on previous reviews but other than that the cottage was fine

The rooms are all bright and airy and clean. Very wee bathroom but adequate - handy downstairs loo. comfy sitting room - loved the 3 couches and also the large table in the dining room. excellent kitchen facilities in the galley kitchen - loved the hob - once we read the instructions - very well equipped. Very central location - a little noisy from the live music at the pub across the road - on the Friday night only. We loved Whitby with the family - so much to do Small gripes: We couldn't always get hot water - did we do something wrong? There is no where to dry clothes off - suggest an airing horse or a pulley

“The tiles in the kitchen came off the wall—luckily no one was preparing food at the time.”

No drying rack/space. The house itself was really interesting and an experience to rent—we loved that part of our holiday. However, it is opposite the Little Angel pub, and the terrace was the venue for noisy music and a pub quiz. This would not have mattered if they had finished by 11, but the noise went on into the small hours. Whitby's traffic problems meant that the road was also noisy with cars speeding round aimlessly in the evenings.
