“Excellent house, superb location.”

Comfy and cosy. Lovely welcome tray with tea, coffee and biscuits. Beds are oh so comfortable. Only thing missing is a foot stool for the living room (and that’s only my personal opinion) will definitely be coming back.

“It was not made clear that the parking was not near the property.”

I had selected only properties with parking and was disappointed firtsly that when I emailed Sykes, no one got back to me and secondly that when I searched reviews I found out there was no parking with the property. In the end we had to sepnd £11 per day on parking. Secondly we had no heating until the eveing before we left. We reported it to 'Maid in Whitby' but she did not come until the Tuesday evening ( we left on Wednesday morning). By this time, the light in the main bathroom ( no windows) had also gone. Very disappointing, it was freezing!

Thank you for your feedback. It does clearly state on the website that council parking permits are provided. We also leave clear guidance in the property to call Maid in Whitby if you experience any issues. If you contacted the team initially we would have been able to provide some scratch cards for you. With regards to the heating issue we did arrange for somebody to attend when we were made aware of the problem. I am sorry to hear that you didn't have a great experience in your opinion. “We found the property smelling fusty and dank throughout our stay.”

The previous occupant's rubbish was left in the hallway and no council refuse sack to dispose with. A search to find one behind the door in the hallway revealed a horribly mouldy, dilapidated external toilet. A good location to explore Whitby being situated on a main shopping street, but we could hear noise from the street through the single sheet windows and music from downstairs beneath the living room. The parking here is unfortunate being at times a distance to walk to Zone W depending on how lucky you are finding a space, this is of course more to deal with the influx of tourists than the property. Unfortunately, we will not be returning.

“The apartment was well equipped and decorated .”

It has 2 toilets which was great when 2 families occupying . The spiral stairs were a challenge for older visitors but we were expecting that . We needed to prop kitchen window open as very warm during our visit . Seagulls a bit of a nuisance but that’s everywhere in Whitby ! ( ear plugs provided) .I would have liked a pouffe to put feet up after a day’s walking !

“The listing for the property said that it had free on-site, hassle-free parking.”

Since the property was located in a ginnel that was 3 feet wide or so (Ellerby Lane) and the roads at each end of the ginnel do not allow parking, this was not true. In fact, I managed to find a parking a parking space after searching for at least an hour, about a mile away on the other side of the river at the top of the cliff. As a 75 year old this was not very convenient, paticularly since parking permits were provded for 6 days only (it was a 7 day stay). I did not feel able to use my car at all during the holiday due to the inconvenience. The flat itself was well decorated, clean and comfortable. One of the bedrooms, however, had a narrow door that obviously had been installed to enable it to be opened without colliding with the bed. Unfortunately, it was still not possible to open it fully since it was binding on the floor. For three of the nights in the flat, it was uncomfortably hot and adjusting the thermostat did not stop the heating coming on. Windows needed to be left open with the attendant problem of seagull noise and church bells disturbing sleep. However ear plugs were provided. Rubbish disposal was a problem. The flat has a swing-bin in the kitchen with a special council-provided transparent liner. This was entirely filled after two days with no additional liners available. The House Book says that the filled liner should be placed in the black seagull-proof bag and left at the end of the ginnel on a Thursday night for collection. In the meantime, the seagull-proof bag should be kept in the lobby of the flat. When we arrived on the Saturday afternoon, the seagull-proof bag was still at the end of the ginnel and had not been emptied. We put it in the lobby as requested. When we put it at the end of the ginnel on the coming Thursday night with our rubbish, it again remained unemptied by the time we vacated the flat on the Saturday morning.

Our property manager's contact information is provided in the handbook for any incidents like the ones you've mentioned, and she is always more than happy to assist. Each radiator does have a thermostat that you are welcome to adjust if the heat is not suitable for you. We would have been more than happy to provide additional scratch tickets for parking, and we apologize for not leaving out enough. We have informed our cleaning team about this issue, it is noted in our listing about the parking. We mention that local authority parking zone scratch cards are provided for designated 'on-street parking' around Whitby, and these are free of charge. We apologize for the parking struggles and for the council not emptying the bins. We take your feedback seriously and will ensure that enough supplies are left out in the future. “Lovely property right in the heart of Whitby.”

However it should be made clearer that there is no off road parking (which at time of booking was listed as available in the accommodation), and that due to the accommodation being in a pedestrianised area you cannot park nearby. There is a parking permit provided, this is for Zone W which is worth looking up before you book, in case you are not able to carry your luggage across the town. We ended up paying for parking in a car park about 1 min walk away (£10.80 per day) rather than hunt for a space across the bridge in the free parking area. We had a lovely stay, but I feel more accurate info re parking and access would have been useful.
