Elaine “Our third visit to Clickety Clack.”
Says it all really. Had a lovely week in this cosy, comfortable cottage. The weather was remarkable for early March, everywhere looked wonderful in the Spring sunshine. This meant that, even very early in the season, Whitby was very busy. This made us appreciate the allocated parking spot even more.

Stuart “Always a pleasure to stay at CCC relaxing, comfortable and on the doorstep of town, and the railway.”
parking is a bonus in Whitby and safe.

Denise “Very disappointed with owner telling both sykes and myself that the bottom bunk bed was suitable for an adult.”
.... not true it was awful. Reading guest book most visitors were either couples or with children ages 3-5 yrs old. I spent one night in hotel and left two days earlier. Which was a shame as we were all looking forward to our holiday in a beautiful cottage. Compliments to Lisa housekeeper, everywhere was spotlessly clean.
- Denise, January 2025We are disappointed to read the single bed spoiled your stay. Although the beds have an unusual set up, as shown in the pictures, they are both standard single bed sizes. The decision in the layout was made to accommodate full size singles rather than 2 small single beds. Yours is the first negative comment relating to the beds and layout since 2015, when we left an explanation in the guest book explaining our reasons. But we appreciate that people have different experiences and needs. We also appreciate your other positive comments on cleanliness to the cottage. Property Owner

Della “We loved our week in Clickety Clack.”
The cottage was very cosy and warm. We enjoyed the views of the trains as they passed daily and the short walk into town. All the facilities were provided and it was very clean. The parking space was an added bonus although we didn’t move the car as we were so close to all amenities and the bus station. Wonderful week in Whitby will definitely visit again.
- Della, November 2024 -
Nigel “Generally comfortable loved the shower and seeing the steam engine go by.”

Martin “An absolute home from home, we could easily live there.”
Parking a god send in whitby. Easy walk into the hustle an bustle of the harbour. Perfect for any train enthusiasts as the steam train goes past daily. Easy access and good communication from the owner. Could do with a coffee table or a nest of tables to put drinks on. All in all a great place to stay.
- Martin, December 2023 -
Roger “Clean, warm, and comfortable.”
Perfect location and parking a bonus. Loved the house, already booked for a return visit.

Safe parking and very quiet location. Would go again.

Denise “Clickety clack is the perfect place to stay, it is within an easy level walk into Whitby and also close by to many other places of interest.”
It has a parking space which is a real bonus in Whitby. The cottage was spotless for us and there was everything that we needed. Although we did eat out several times we did make meals back at the house and the kitchen was very well stocked. The house felt clean and well cared for and I would have no hesitation in recommending Clickety Clack as the perfect place to stay in Whitby.
- Denise, September 2023 -
Rita “Lovely clean, comfortable cottage in a very convenient location, with views over river towards abbey and church.”
Good for steam railway enthusiasts too. If we decided to return to Whitby we would certainly like to book this cottage again. However, after 35 years of attending Folk Week, we now find that music fringe is not so good and the town generally overcrowded and expensive - so we may not return.
- Rita, August 2023 -
Maureen “Lovely, clean, modern, bright and homely, upside down cottage, right next to the railway line with steam engines passing by regularly.”
A dedicated parking space is a bonus. Pretty much everything has been thought of to make your stay enjoyable and comfortable. We highly recommend Clickety-Clack cottage!
- Maureen, June 2023 -
Kerry “We had a joyful stay in Whitby.”
The cottage was perfect, had everything we required and in a great location. Private parking is a real bonus too. Easy walk into the centre. Can’t wait to return.
- Kerry, June 2023 -
Julie “Absolutely superb in every way.”
Loved the views and the location was great. Clickety clack was a lovely, clean and well equipped cottage and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Whitby is such a lovely town and we will be back many times.

Patricia “Nice tidy and very clean property that is so convenient for the town.”
Would recommend this property.
- Patricia, May 2023 -
Patricia “First time fir us renting a cottage and this didn't disappoint.”
Has the owner anymore properties in whitby.just asking f9or future holidays. Only one thing we would want more loo rolls and a full kitchen roll. Small things I know. I found the floor at bottom of stairs quite slippy. And climbing into Bath for shower .but bath would suit families. Otherwise all good.
- Patricia, April 2023 -
Elaine “We had a lovely stay in this clean, comfortable, cosy and well located cottage.”
Loved the views and the subtle railway theme. Parking a real bonus. Definitely one to return to.
- Elaine, March 2023 -
Lisa “Fabulous cottage to stay in and just booked again for next year.”
Ticked all the boxes for us especially the private parking. Town centre a 5 minute walk with a Co op on the doorstep. Just need to bring your own towels.
- Lisa, January 2023 -
Sarah “We had a lovely relaxing break in Whitby and clickety-clack cottage made it perfect.”
It was scrupulously clean, comfortably furnished and well located. We appreciated the views of the boats and the abbey from the kitchen/lounge whilst enjoying the cottage facilities. The walk into Whitby town centre only took five minutes. The train into Whitby station runs behind the cottage - the trains are few and they did not wake or disturb us. For us, it was all part of the quirky charm. The owner’s communication was friendly and responsive. We would not hesitate to return.
- Sarah, December 2022 -
Graham Clifford “Our first time at Clickety Clack cottage although we have stayed at quite a few of the other Railway Cottages.”
This Cottage is up there with the best of them, we had no problems whatsoever. Spotlessly clean and well equipped. 10 out of 10 for this one.
- Graham Clifford, December 2022 -
Stuart “A very good stay as usual 3rd time stay there, just one thing not that it affected me, it states in the hand book dvd's in the drawers below the tv there is none.”
once again very pleased with my stay and booked for 2023.

A clean warm n comfortable cottage with parking in the heart of whitby , a smashing week ,everything in the cottage we could have wanted , the passing trains were the icing on the cake and we will return when possible, thankyou to our hosts
- Carole, September 2022 -
Sheila “Very good location.”
We just left our car at the parking space and did not use it again. Great bus service too. Whitby itself was extremely lovely and the 199 steps to the Abbey well worth the visit. It was a very pleasant week and we will definitely consider a return.
- Sheila, August 2022 -
Sallyann “My first words when I walked in the cottage was Wow The cottage was amazing , there was everything that would be wanted for a holiday .”
It was clean , well decorated and the location was perfect . Loved the trains and the views of the river Private parking was a superb bonus too
- Sallyann, July 2022 -
Brent “The cottage was home from home with all the comforts, well equipped good location for the town, nice views towards the abbey, and onsite parking which is a bonus in Whitby.”
We enjoyed my stay at Clickety-Clack Cottage.
- Brent, June 2022 -
Gemma “I felt the cottage was better than advertised, we loved everything about it from the view, to the comfy sofas and dining furniture to the massive bath.”
Great walks right on the doorstep and a short level walk to town across the car park, it was great. Would definitely book for next holiday in Whitby.
- Gemma, April 2022 -

Great upside down cottage right near the centre of whitby even in March we had to turn heating off it was so warm plenty of hot water for showers and bed comfy we would definitely stay here when we come back loved the cottage
- David, March 2022 -
David “Exellent value.”
And extremely good customer service. Pleasant stay.
- David, February 2022 -
Paul “Everything was as discribed .”
Fab cottage in the heart of Whitby. Wish we could have stopped longer. The only negative for us was the mattress is set into the frame of the bed so kept catching our legs on it as walked by. Not a major problem though as once had done it a couple of times remembered
- Paul, January 2022 -
F “We had a lovely weeks stay at Clickety Clack Cottage it was very clean and so close to shops and the centre of town.”
We would love the stay again.
- F, January 2022 -
Paul “The property is maintained to an extremely high standard and that is also evident in the cleanliness of the property.”
Location is excellent in order to access Whitby attractions and the designated parking space is a big bonus. Communication with the owner was excellent and great to be given some recommendations of where to eat etc. An excellent week and would certainly book Clickety Clack if we return to Whitby.
- Paul, December 2021 -
Neil “We had a wonderful long weekend despite storm Arwen which brought the worst of weathers; Gale force bitterly cold winds and snow.”
We wrapped up each day and went exploring the beautiful town particularly the winding cobbled lanes lined with individual Jet shops up to the famous 199 steps and church which was being decorated for Christmas. So lovely to come home to Clickity Clack cottage which was warm, spotlessly clean and so well kitted out. We had great views of the choppy harbour and the Abbey, only disappointment was all trains cancelled due to weather and be aware steam trains do not run after October 31st. We will certainly book again as we love Whitby ❤️. Recommend the Magpie for not just fish and chips but so much more including oysters! Also The Stables a little way out of town for a great Sunday lunch and breakfast on our leaving day.
- Neil, November 2021 -
Stuart “As stated above a very pleasant stay, puzzled by the bring your own towels request as they wash the bedding and any other soiled items, why?”
Also i went on my own but if a family with maybe a couple of kids there was nothing to amuse them with ie, board games, dvd's books there was not even a pen to put comments in the guest book. I would personally return there above were just visual things i noticed.
- Stuart, November 2021 -
Sheree “Wonderful cottage everything you need like home from home.”
lovely views we will return hopefully..No complaints whatsoever
- Sheree, September 2021 -
Barbara “A beautiful cottage, well furnished in a fantastic spot.”
We loved staying at Clickerty Clack Cottage. However, not as clean as we would have liked. We had to wipe out the fridge, bread bid, kitchen work tops, dining table and the bin in the kitchen, which had food stuff all over the inside of the lid and smelt. I had to vacuum the whole cottage. Some of the floor area's looked like they hadn't been properly vacuumed. A bit disappointing. The bathrooms and the beds were very clean though.
- Barbara, August 2021 -
Sarah “Fantastic cottage, clean and spacious, great attention to detail in the interior with every need considered, my children particularly loved the railway themed door signs!”
Perfect location for us and having a parking space made the holiday so much easier. We are definitely hoping to book again some time next year, thank you!
- Sarah, July 2021 -
Anne “Wonderful cottage in a great position in Whitby Well equipped and very comfortable train themed with steam trains passing in front of us daily !”
! Loved it !!
- Anne, July 2021 -
Sarah “Our stay at Clickety Clack Cottage in June 2021 was an absolute joy.”
Originally meant to take place in 2020, the holiday had in obviously been pushed back because of the pandemic but we’re so glad we eventually made it. The weather was glorious and the cottage was the best we’ve ever stayed in. Whitby wasn’t hindered by the COVID restrictions either, so we felt safe while enjoying our holiday. We stayed in Clickety Clack with our two children, aged four and two, and they loved the steam and vintage diesel trains running past the patio and they also loved the bunk beds, as well as the novelty of staying in an “upside down” house. My husband and I loved how well stocked the cottage was, how clean and comfy it was, and how close to all the local amenities you are. It’s small but perfectly formed and we’ll definitely be booking to stay again in the future.
- Sarah, June 2021 -
C “Very well presented, clean and tidy cottage.”
Everything we needed. Nicely positioned for the centre of Whitby with the bonus of a parking space. Great for watching the steam trains and the river activity. We had a wonderful holiday.
- C, June 2021 -
Jason “It's the second time we've stayed at this cottage, we love the location and the steam trains running past.”
The cottage has been finished well, lovely and comfortable with all basic facilities you'd expect. There is wi fi, probably not the fastest but fine for what we needed it for. It's a nice little stroll into town if you want to go to a restaurant at night or the shops and sites during the day. A cottage with parking is very handy, saves the need for a car park. I would say its ideal for a quiet get away, but close enough other facilities should you want to, my wife and I love it.
- Jason, May 2021 -
Sue “Cottage clean and well equipped, as described, and with parking, which is a real bonus in Whitby.”
Helpful and pleasant owner. Low mark only because of really slow broadband, although owner said he will look into that.
- Sue, May 2021 -
Tracey “Think it may be worth mentioning the early morning trains going passed.”
They didn’t bother us as we are early risers but 6am might be a bit annoying for some as they are loud as they go by
- Tracey, September 2020 -
Cheryl “We stayed in the cottage as a family of 4 in August 2020; our children were 6 and 9 at the time of our visit.”
Our first impression of the cottage was lovely, a delightful setting, beautifully decorated, private parking and just away from the hustle and bustle of Whitby but near enough to walk. The views of the harbour and abbey were stunning and the Co-op was a short 3 minute walk away - perfect! The cottage itself was very well equipped, in fact the kitchen probably had more than we were expecting with washing up liquid, foil and kitchen roll and dishwasher tablets amongst other things readily and available. Whitby itself was extremely busy, almost too busy given the circumstances surrounding Covid but that is not the reason for the 3 star review. This is based solely on the cottage itself. With it being an upside down building the bathroom was downstairs and was built at the rear of the cottage into the hillside; this meant no windows to let in fresh air, as a result, with 4 people in the cottage the atmosphere was always a bit damp after our daily showers - in fact it took me three days to dry a load of washing. We followed the instructions with the fan and the heated towel rail but you can’t compensate for fresh air. Due to the building being in the middle of a terrace type row, the cottage was also very hot and not easy to cool down even with windows open. Now for the noisy bit - the cottage is built directly at the side of the railway line, this was perfect for watching the steam trains pass by during the day, it was almost magical to see...the only problem was the 06:15 and 06:30 whitby to Pickering trains that passed each morning, because the cottage it next to a pedestrian crossing, the trains are required to sound their horns upon their approach, this was a less than ideal wake up call! The other issue was the large harbour car park directly opposite. On the weekend the car park was visited by numerous young adults until 2 o’clock in the morning, there was a lot of shouting, screaming and cars racing/performing donuts outside the cottage which was a terrible shame. All in all; we had a nice holiday but I don’t think we would return to this cottage, which is a shame because the owners have clearly spent a lot of time making it an enjoyable place to stay.
- Cheryl, August 2020 -
Sonya “Perfectly situated, clean and had everything you could possibly need.”
Would highly recommend.
- Sonya, July 2020 -
Wendy “Great location and views.”
- Wendy, March 2020 -
Margaret “A lovely comfortable cottage, nicely furnished and well equipped.”
The location is perfect, whether your a rail enthusiast or not. A nice 5 minute stroll into the town. Private parking is a definate plus point. The floor boards are a bit creaky and anyone moving around in the living room/kitchen can be heard in the bedrooms below, but we coped
- Margaret, February 2020 -
Sandra “Must mention lack of towels.”
Have used Sykes on many occasions and have always had towels.Obviously I missed this on website.Otherwise fantastic property in a great location in Whitby.Parking space always a plus in Whitby.
- Sandra, December 2019 -
Sharon “Our holiday was amazing from booking to taking it.”
The cottage was perfectly situated for all that whitby offers. We parked our car in the allocated space and didn't move it till we left. Clickety clack is warm, inviting and comfortable for a lovely weeks stay, it has everything you need for a self catering holiday, it is like a home from home, this was our second visit to this property and certainly wont be our last.
- Sharon, September 2019 -
M “Delightful cottage with all needs met.”
Perfect location with views of the harbour and Whitby Abbey from window. Added bonus of steam trains going past and so close to all amenities in the town. Would highly recommend this cottage.
- M, August 2019 -
Beryl “Smaller than anticipated.”
Bed hard. In order to get out of the down stairs door we had to do a side shuffle to get past the bed. The bin smelt had not been washed. The kitchen sink had food left in the plug hole. The toaster had crumbs left in therefore did not use. It did not feel clean. Not good value for money for what we paid. Would say not big enough for 4 people. The bench in the kitchen was uncomfortable, did not think the views were as good as the site mentioned. You are over looking the railway line and car park. You can see a little of the river. The best view was the abbey. The bench outside was too uncomfortable to sit at not very welcoming at all. It would have been nice to have a table and chairs. The steam trains were very good. It would have been nice to have been welcomed with some milk after a long journey. Most places we have stayed at the owner has left milk biscuits bread, even oil and ketchup etc. No extra toilet paper only the two rolls to last the week. The good thing was the weather was lovely so we went out most days.
- Beryl, July 2019 -
Anne “Brilliant cottage great location loved our stay !”
! We will be back !!
- Anne, July 2019 -
Philip “This is the second time we have stayed here and we have booked it again for the third time so would highly recommend this cottage.”
It’s got everything you need to feel at home while you are away especially with a young family. The trains going by are an added bonus for the children. Lovely view and close to the centre
- Philip, June 2019 -
Kathryn “Lovely cottage with everything you need for a perfect holiday.”
Good location for walking to the old Whitby town, the beach, restaurants and shops. Added bonus of the steam trains passing by so nice to sit outside in the sun and watch them........couldn't fault the cottage at all other than very creaky if you go downstairs to bed but other members stay upstairs but that is nothing that can be helped it must be the structure causing it..........would not hesitate to book the cottage again and highly recommend it.
- Kathryn, May 2019 -
Jean “We love this cottage and have visited quite a number of times.”
It is in a great location, so near to the town, the dedicated parking is so handy and even if the weather is bad, you can sit and enjoy the view from the sitting room window. All in all, everything is good about it.
- Jean, May 2019 -
Alison “The cottage is in a perfect location, close to the centre of Whitby and it's bars and restaurants.”
There is a good view of the harbour and when running the steam trains. Clickety clack cottage has everything you need for a weeks holiday. The carton of milk left for our arrival was a nice touch. The small bedroom is well designed to make the most of a small space and there is plenty of storage including extra hanging space under the stairs. Really enjoyed our week and would recommend this cottage.
- Alison, March 2019 -
John “Stayed in this wondeful cottage in March this year.”
It was clean, warm, cosy and everything you could possibly want is to hand a little home form home. We were very comfortable the water was always piping hot.The mattress in the double room has recently been renewed and this made for a really comfy nights sleep. We slept better at the cottage than in any other place we've stayed. We were disappointed that the North York's Railway steam train wasn't actually running, we were a bit too early as it runs form Easter on wards (our mistake) Would have been really lovely to watch the trains from the cottage window or even on the patio. The weather was beautiful for March warm & sunny we couldn't have asked for better weather, this also made our stay as we got out and about quite a bit. Blessing that there is a designated car parking space for the cottage once we parked up we walked everywhere it was really lovely to stay in Whitby and see it when its not so hectic. Whitby is a busy vibrant place to visit but sometimes it's crazy busy. There are plenty of places to eat and drink and masses of shops to visit. Excellent little cottage we would defiantly book it again. We hoped to book the sister cottage " The Shipwrights" which is bigger for a break with friends in October but we couldn't get the dates. Maybe we'll be luckier with "The Shipwrights" next year!
- John, March 2019 -

Second time we have been to this cottage, it is warm comfortable and very pleasant, a bonus is the parking and being a short walk into Whitby
- Jan, October 2018 -
Kathleen “It is a lovely location with numerous destinations to visit.”
Robin Hoods Bay and Pickering two name two. In Whitby itself there are dozens of great places to eat and drink. It is a lovely town, beautiful scenery, great setting. Clickety Clack is ideally situated, just a couple of minutes walk to the town centre/railway station/bus depot/shops. I am sure we will be returning in the future, God willing.
- Kathleen, September 2018 -
Judith “A very well appointed property and a level walk to the centre of Whitby.”
There were a few pieces of dirty crockery and cutlery in the cupboard when we arrived and two chipped mugs that need replacing but spot checks when the property is cleaned should easily correct this. But all in all a nice place to stay and enjoy the area which we did indeed. Would recommend this place for two adults or two adults with children but not four adults as the space is limited.
- Judith, September 2018 -
Allan “The property had not been cleaned properly when we arrived, we contacted the owner who arranged for their housekeeper to come round and do the most immediate work, but generally the property was generally grubby and getting a bit worn out and in need of a refurb.”
It is a great location but we won't be staying at this property again. Standing over someone who has not done their job properly is not my idea of a good start to a holiday!
- Allan, September 2018Thank you for your feed back and thank you for letting us know about your concerns straight away allowing us to rectify the issues. Our housekeeper arrived at the cottage within 30 minutes of the call and was able to fully resolve the situation. We're very sorry that you found the standards of the property was not to your satisfaction, despite excellent guest comments about the high standards of cleanliness of our cottage. Property Owner

Philip “Fantastic house with everything you could possibly need.”

Ann “Excellent accommodation with important car parking facilities.”
However the one downside was that there was no WIFI. This is important in this day and age. This could possibly be a deal breaker in the future if not added.
- Ann, March 2017 -
John “Great little cottage.”
It might be worth stating that it has a Sky box in case people want to bring their own to use. Also, it would be nice to have WIFI
- John, January 2017 -
Colin “It was great that we where able to book midweek to midweek.”
A very homely cottage.
- Colin, January 2017 -
Brynley “What fun watching the busy Parkol boatyard and floating dock in the harbour from the upstairs living room and the floodlit Abbey at night.”
River walks from the door. Peace and quiet, all a short walk to the town centre.
- Brynley, December 2016 -
Peter “With the weather being only 5/6 degrees it was lovely coming back to a very warm cottage , in fact even with the thermostat set at 12 deg we had to open the window to cool down.”
We have stayed in Whitby about 15 times and this cottage exceeds any we have stayed at.
- Peter, November 2016 -
Margaret “Everything was wonderful even the weather.”
If we had to complain it would be a safety handrail in the bath/shower which would be useful for everyone, (not just for us oldies), we noticed this had been remarked upon in guests comments book in Clickety Clack Cottage also.
- Margaret, September 2016 -
Sharon “Clickety-Clack Cottage has everything you could ever want or need whilst away from home and is in a superb location only 5 minutes walk away from town.”
The steam trains are an added bonus! We will return!

It was a home from home with amazing views and conveniently situated.
- Julie, November 2015 -
Len “We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Clickety-Clack Cottage, the cottage itself was all we could wish for, and the location could not be better.”
The centre of Whitby was not more than a 5 minute walk, also parking at the cottage was a big plus. My wife and I holiday in Whitby most years, so now for any future visits we shall look no further than Clickety-Clack for our base.
- Len, August 2015 -
Linda “We liked the décor, cleanliness, views, location to town, parking and in fact everything about the cottage.”
- Linda, August 2015 -
Sharon “A lovely situated cottage, with great views of the harbour and abbey.”

Had great links for train and bus. Whitby itself was very quaint, a great holiday location.

The location is perfect for access to town, shops and pubs, whilst also being close to the road outward bound for excursions. Even over Christmas the river provides frequent changes of scenery. My contact with the owners was very simple and efficient and they displayed a very pleasant nature. Most enjoyable, have rebooked.

Everything you could ask for and more. Top of the range furnishings, beds excellent, don't be put off by the bunk beds, I am 6ft and 14 stone and slept like a log in them ! Tried both lol! Anyone who moans about the sofas being uncomfortable needs their heads examining, they swallowed you up in perfect comfort. If this is the type of cottage Sykes offer, I will be booking with you every year. Absolutely beautiful holiday from start to finish.

10 minute stroll across car park round Marina to the shops on level. Hadleys fish restaurant good value over bridge on corner on right. View and parking a big bonus. Grossmort is worth a visit if the steam trains that passes close to the cottage isn't near enough.

Marie “The cottage was situated within easy walking distance of all the facilities in Whitby, with the added advantage of its own parking spot.”
There was a lovely view across the river and we could see the Abbey. Although they were not running whilst we were there, a lovely touch - especially to people like my husband who loves steam trains - was the fact that the steam trains from the NYM Railway run directly in front of the cottage.
