“The cottage was outstanding with one tiny exception.”

On the side of the master suite double bed there is a padlock which is positioned in a spot which means that when swinging out of bed in the morning it is very easy to catch one’s leg on the metal sharp surfaces. Ouch! Very small criticism of an otherwise outstanding accommodation.

The property

Quintessentially Whitby, Mariner’s Watch really does live up to its name, with the best panoramic views in the area overlooking the bay, the beach, the sea, and of course, the quirky town that is Whitby, North Yorkshire.

Perfect for a family celebration or luxury stay, this fabulous holiday home rests over three floors, just below Whitby Abbey on the affectionately known ‘Donkey Trail’ which runs parallel to the famous 199 Steps.

Built at the turn of the 20th century by a returning mariner, this double-fronted brick villa is ideal at any time of the year, with its fully-equipped and inviting interior, complete with a toasty woodburning stove, and triple-aspect garden home to a sheltered hot tub area.

Inside, beautifully decorated living areas welcome you and your loved ones to relax and unwind after a day of exploring this iconic area.

Have the chef of the group rustle up a delicious dinner, perhaps something from the local fishmonger, before making your way to the dining room to feast and plan another adventurous day.

From here, gather in the sitting room and cosy up while the woodburning stove flickers.

When sleep calls, five superb bedrooms offer space to rest before another fun-filled day out, one of which with a handy en-suite for extra privacy, and the remaining four served by a bathroom and a ground-floor shower room.

When you wake, savour a coffee with a view in the sunroom, or perhaps step out into the garden for a soak in the hot tub.

Another show-stealing feature of this home, the garden is perfect for entertaining with aspects over the north, south and west, the west offering a more private space away from the track and perfectly suited for catching the last of the evening sun with a glass of wine.

When it’s time to venture out, there’s so much to do, including spending the day lounging on the soft sands of Whitby Beach, checking out the Whitby and Captain Cook Museums, and sipping local ales at the Whitby Brewery.

Culture vultures can spend their days watching a show at the Whitby Pavilion, touring the stunning Whitby Abbey, dining on seafood at The Marine Bar & Restaurant, or even experiencing a whale-watching excursion.

If you want to step outside of the town, why not try Robin Hood's Bay, where you may explore the Robin Hood's Bay Museum, have a quick bite at The Cove, stroll down the sands of Robin Hood's Bay Beach, or check out the National Trust Old Coastguard Station?

Slightly further afield in the popular town of Scarborough, Alpamare and Luna Park, Scarborough Castle, the SEA LIFE centre, the Cleveland Way, and the Scarborough Open Air Theatre can all be enjoyed.

A spectacular holiday home for a break with memories that will last a lifetime, choose Mariner’s Watch.
